Aerial View of Myrtos Beach
The story of Myrtos beach – A wild beauty
Myrtos, is one of the most famous and spectacular beaches in Greece and a symbol of the Kefalonia island. It is located 29 km north of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, in the region of Pylaros, on the north-west of Kefalonia. Myrtos beach has gained worldwide reputation and has been awarded many times for its natural beauty.
It is positioned between the feet of two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros. The surrounding sediment at Myrtos Beach is generally made of marble and the beach is made up of round, white cobblestones. Longshore drift, along with wave energy, has shaped the shore. As waves curve along the beach they also pick up the finest bits of marble; this creates sediment plumes that follow the curve of the beach with the direction of the waves giving the water a shade of turquoise.
Our experience at Myrtos Beach (spoiler alert: you will totally fall in love)
Myrtos beach is a masterpiece sculpted by nature. We visited Myrtos in September, early in the morning, around 9.00 am. The sunlight started falling on the white pebbled coast a while later, changing the colors of the sea from deep blue to electric blue and turquoise.
The ocean water was clear and cold. The sea is deep and there are always waves, so you need to be careful while swimming there. Myrtos is not a safe beach when it is windy, be careful when you play in the beautiful waves.
Making a day trip there, from sunrise to sunset is highly recommended. If you spend your day at Myrtos (like we did…) you will be rewarded with a magical sunset, right in-front of you. You can get some coffee and snacks from the beach bar, bring your own food, or even visit Divarata, which is really close and try the local cuisine there.
Since it was not too windy, we gathered some aerial footage with our drones and cameras. The aerial view of Myrtos is spectacular.
Here is a sunset timelapse video we created for you, until you visit Myrtos yourself.
(In the video above you can also see the smoke coming from a large fire that broke out in Kapandriti area.)
Some extra info for you:
You can access Myrtos by sea if you have a private boat, or by car or bus. There is also an area you can park your car.
Beach lounges and umbrellas are available for hire.
Fun facts:
Kefalonia is one of the largest Ionian islands. It is right in the middle of two tectonic plates which bashed together creating many devastating earthquakes.
Some tips:
Be careful while swimming in the open ocean.
While driving in Kefalonia always watch out for random goats wandering on the road.
